During the 3rd millennium BC, a number of cultural innovations are introduced to Mesopotamia:  first and foremost, "worshipper statues" ("Beterstatuen") and votive plaques ("Weihplatten"), but also the deification of kings and further elements hitherto unknown to Mesopotamian religious practice, political ideology and iconography.
Attemps at identifying local antecedents to these innovations or outlining their gradual evolution within Mesopotamian culture have remained unconvincing.
On the other hand, the culture of Old Kingdom Egypt does provide continuous documentation for the formation and development of precisely these cultural elements. Their diffusion and adaptation from Egypt to Mesopotamia is the topic of this study.
